Preliminary athlete registration number for World Archery Championships breaks 600

A total of 617 athletes from 86 countries feature on the preliminary entry list for the 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships being held on 10-16 June in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

The event also acts as the primary qualification tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Historically, Olympic qualifiers attract the largest attendance of any international tournament.

The last three editions of the World Archery Championships that have preceded the Olympic Games have all broken the 500-mark in the number of competitors. Copenhagen 2015 had 585 athletes, Torino 2011 had 562 athletes and, in 2007, 529 athletes attended Leipzig.

Although the final entry list will change, 2019 could mark the first world championships to break 600 in the number of competitors.

Countries may send a maximum of three athletes per category – recurve men, recurve women, compound men and compound women – to the World Archery Championships, unlike Hyundai Archery World Cup stages where the maximum is four.

There are 56 places for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games available at the ’s-Hertogenbosch 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships.

The top eight recurve teams qualify three spots, along with the top four individuals from nations that are not already qualified in the team event. Places are won for a nation and not by a specific athlete.

Preliminary entries for the 2019 World Archery Para Championships numbered 304 from 48 countries. The event acts as the primary qualification tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

A total of 260 para athletes from 46 countries competed in the last World Archery Para Championships that was also a Paralympic qualifier when it was held in Donaueschingen, Germany in 2015.

Due to the number of preliminary entries not reaching the minimum required by World Archery’s rules, there will be no official world championship awarded in the women’s W1 team and visually impaired team events. Separate individual competitions for the visually impaired 1 and visually impaired 2/3 categories will be held.
