Mexican archer Linda Ochoa-Anderson shot a 15-arrow 50-metre match of 150/150 points with 11X during the bronze medal match at the 2018 Gator Cup in Newberry, Florida, USA on 12 May, to beat the compound women’s world record by one arrow in the X-ring, subject to ratification.
Compound athletes score an inner ring, called the X, which is half the size of the 10 and breaks ties. It also defines world records when the maximum points score is reached.
“I didn’t know I was close to the record, I just wanted to shoot 150. I closed with three Xs and Steve [Anderson] told me he thought I was close. I said ‘no, I only shot like 4 Xs’ and he laughed,” said Linda.
“When we went to the target, I’d shot 11 – which was awesome! Having a world record has always been one of my dreams.”
The previous record – 150 10X – was set by Sara Lopez at the Hyundai Archery World Cup stage in Medellin, Colombia in 2013. She shot an 11X match in late 2017, but it was not ratified as a record as it did not meet ratification requirements.
World number 11 ranked Linda will take that mark, assuming her score passes the checks.
Ochoa-Anderson, who is married to the USA’s Steve Anderson, has been shooting internationally since 2002. She finished eighth at the first stage of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China.
