Matus Durny Jr shoots world record of 1428/1440

Slovakia’s Matus Durny Jr shot 50-metre rounds of 711 and 717 points during a domestic event in Jazov on 6 April for a 1428 total score and a new compound men’s world record for the double 50-metre qualifying round.

“There are a couple of days after that but I still cannot believe what happened,” he said. “It was just perfect, everything was great, I’m not sure if there was anything out of my control.”

“Every time I was 100% focused only for myself, nothing like shooting for record or for win, it was just shooting for pure passion.”

Durny put just one point on the previous world-best score (1427), which had recently been set by 20-year-old Tim Jevsnik in March, with nearly perfect weather conditions during the event.

“Very important was that the bow and equipment ran without a single problem,” the new world record holder explained. “I have to thank my friend Jozef Bosansky who always helps me with setup, for sure the weather was perfect.”

The 37-year-old has been shooting since he was 12, but took a break from the sport a few years back (2015-2019). He returned to archery just before the Covid-19 pandemic and has trained with reigning European Games Champion Bosansky in recent years, competing together internationally. 

Matus will be part of the Slovakia’s team heading to the European Outdoor Championships in Essen in May and the second stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in Antalya in June.
