Newly-crowned European Games Champion Florian Unruh is set to lead the home team at the upcoming Hyundai World Archery Championships in Berlin, following squad announcements from the German archery federation.

He’s joined by Moritz Wieser and Maximilian Weckmüller in the recurve men’s line-up. The reigning European Champion recurve women’s team – comprised of Katharina Bauer, Michelle Kroppen and Charline Schwarz – will look to upgrade their continental title to the world podium, and secure an early Olympic quota place in the process.

“I’m super relieved,” admitted current world-number-four Bauer.

“After the first day [of trials], I was confused. I had a very difficult start but I decided to fight to the last arrow. It was super close so I’m all the happier that it worked out.”

The trials for the recurve squad were held over three days in late May.

Compound selections followed in mid-June, with Katharina Raab, Julia Böhnke, Jennifer Walter, Leon Hollas, Florian Grafmans and Sebastian Hamdorf securing nominations to the championship team.

Germany currently sits 20th in the all-time medal table at the World Archery Championships (1931-present). Kristina Berger secured its only world title, since reunification in 1990, by winning the compound women’s event in Belek in 2013. She subsequently came third in 2017.

With two Olympic medals from the last two Games – and three recurve archers currently ranked in the world top 10s, more will be expected in 2023.

“We have long trials behind us with good results and performances that we now have to translate into the international picture,” said German head coach Oliver Haidn.

Each country can field a maximum of three archers per category at the worlds (12 total). This means that no substitutions are possible for the team events, unlike at stages of the Hyundai Archery World Cup, where nations may enter four archers per category (16 total).

Spectator tickets for the 2023 Hyundai World Archery Championships arena sessions on 4-6 August remain on sale via Ticketmaster.  Single day tickets cost 14 EUR while a three-day ticket costs 28 EUR.

Entry to the public zone during the qualification and elimination stages is free of charge.

Olympic quota spots will be awarded on Friday 4 (teams) and Sunday 6 (individuals) August. Competition at the 2023 Hyundai World Archery Championships starts with qualifying on Tuesday 1 August.
