More than 2000 shoot virtual Vegas ahead of delayed championships

Shootdowns at the Vegas Shoot in 2020.

Traditionally the last event on the annual Indoor Archery World Series, the Vegas Shoot was forced to split and adjust in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 2000 amateurs took part in virtual flights, which ran from 12 March to 12 April. Archers could shoot their 90-arrow Vegas round at any 20-yard range in the world as long as they were in a group of three or four.

There was a fee to enter and cash prizes will be awarded to the top places.

The largest category was the compound flights, which attracted a phenomenal 805 entrants and was won by Mexico’s Jesus Sanchez who also topped the open ranking for this season’s Indoor Archery World Series, with a perfect 900 and 88 Xs.

(The national Field Archery Association’s Vegas round uses the four-centimetre recurve 10-ring for compound archers. The X corresponds to World Archery’s two-centimetre compound 10-ring.)

Professional archers will compete in the championship divisions at a delayed live event being held this weekend in Las Vegas. More than 240 shooters are registered, including over 100 in the famous championship open category.

The competition runs from Thursday 15 April to Saturday 17 April.

Kyle Douglas is the reigning Vegas Shoot compound open champion.
