Two world records among top ranking round scores of 2019

Brady Ellison, Kang Chae Young, Kim Jongho and Sara Lopez shot the highest qualification scores at international events in 2019. Ellison and Kang set new recurve world records of 702 and 692 points.

Kim Jongho’s 716 – four points off perfect and two off Braden Gellenthien’s world record – came at the 2019 Universiade in Napoli, Italy.

Lopez had 713 at the first event of the season in Medellin.

The new recurve men’s world record of 702 out of a possible 720 points was one of the biggest stories to come out of the Pan American Games in Lima.

During an historic season that saw Brady Ellison become world champion, world number one and Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion for a record fifth time – he also became the second recurve archer to break 700 for the ranking round.

The record had stood at 700 since Kim Woojin set it at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“It means so much. I’ve been shooting so good this year,” said Brady in Lima. “I’ve been shooting good enough and I had the weather to do it and it’s nice to finally get it.”

Last season was the third in a row and the fourth time in five years that the recurve women’s world record was increased.

Park Sung-Hyun’s score of 682 points at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games had stood as the record for 11 years until Ki Bo Bae shot 686 at the Universiade in 2015. Choi Misun and Kang Chae Young have bumped the world-best score since then.

It now sits at 692 points. Chae Young, the reigning world number one, shot that at the 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships in ’s-Hertogenbosch.

The average level of recurve scores traditionally rises in an Olympic year. Could the recurve women’s world record fall for a fourth consecutive season?
