Claro Sports becomes World Archery’s exclusive pay-TV broadcast partner in Latin America
- Claro Sports now exclusive pay-television archery broadcaster in Latin America.
- Deal covers 17 territories including Mexico and Colombia.
- Programming starts with first Hyundai Archery World Cup stage in Medellin.
World Archery and Claro Sports have signed an exclusive pay-television deal that will see dedicated Spanish-language broadcast of international archery tournaments across 17 territories in 2019.
The agreement covers the Hyundai Archery World Cup circuit and the upcoming Hyundai World Archery Championships in ’s-Hertogenbosch, which also act as the main qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Claro has acquired the rights in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Archery’s popularity in Mexico, where Claro is based, has seen steady growth since Mexican archers Aida Roman and Mariana Avitia won silver and bronze medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Mexico City also hosted the Archery World Cup Final in 2015 and the Hyundai World Archery Championships in 2017.
The first stage of the international circuit in 2019 is being held at the end of April in Medellin, Colombia, one of the territories in which Claro has a strong presence. Colombian archer Sara Lopez was unbeaten in international competition last season.
Claro Sports is also an Olympic broadcaster and recently signed a partnership with the Olympic Channel.
World Archery secretary general Tom Dielen said: “Mexico and Colombia have become key markets for us with the rise of talented athletes and hosting of world-class tournaments over the last decade. This partnership gives archery the opportunity to reach a wider audience in a region well-known to be passionate about sports.”
Claro Sports CEO José Antonio Aboumrad welcomed the agreement and said: "There will be a wide dissemination of archery sport throughout Latin America, where it has a prevalent acceptance among the public and which audience grows every day, also this agreement will help us to expand the diffusion of archery among the Olympics sports and Olympism.”
