World Archery President impressed by progress in IR Iran
World Archery President Prof Dr Ugur Erdener met with IR Iran’s Minister of Youth and Sports, the President of Iran’s National Olympic Committee and members of Parliament during his visit to the country on 19/20 December.
He also visited the archery training facilities in Tehran, met with archery federation President Mohammad Ali Shojaei, and spoke with members of the national coaching staff and athletes.
Over 150 archers were training or competing at the venue at the time.
“IR Iran now has more than 30,000 people participating in archery at all levels – an impressive number that is testament to the positive work of the national federation,” said Prof Dr Erdener.
“To see so many young athletes utilising these fantastic facilities in Tehran, and travelling to recent world-class events in Marrakesh and Bangkok, speaks to the potential our sport has here.”
Zahra Nemati – the first Iranian woman to win gold at either Games when she climbed the podium at London 2012 – successfully defended her Paralympic gold medal and made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016.
She was also chosen as Iran’s flagbearer for the Olympic opening ceremony in Brazil.
