Statement on attack at Istanbul Airport
World Archery was deeply saddened by the news of a terrorist attack at Istanbul Ataturk Airport and extends its thoughts to those affected and the families of those affected by the incident. Acts of terrorism are unjustifiable and World Archery condemns the action.
The third stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup was held in Antalya, Turkey less than two weeks ago, and many athletes and officials who attended the event flew through the airport.
World Archery would like to extend its thanks to the organisers in Antalya and security forces in Turkey for ensuring that event was completed safely.
World Archery President, who was supposed to be making a trip to Lausanne but whose trip was postponed earlier in the week, said:
“I am without words. On behalf of the World Archery Family, I pass our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims of this attack.”
“On behalf of humanity, we need peace and to stop all kinds of terrorism. We hope that the Olympic Truce that will come with the opening of the Rio Olympic Games will be a real start to peace.”
“I would like to thank the IOC President, the many IOC Members, the IOC Director General and everyone else in the Olympic Movement that sent messages of support last night and this morning.”
