Compound archer Sander DOLDERMAN was enjoying his time at the world field this year, qualifying in fourth place. He was looking to convert that strong start into at least a final four finish as two years ago in Val d’Isere he came fourth, losing the bronze medal match 63-58.
He won’t get another shot at a podium in Zagreb, though.
“Qualification rounds were good. Today I was taking too long with my shots, had a few bad, and really thought 200 was enough to make the cut,” a disappointed DOLDERMAN said, after missing the top eight placing he needed in the first elimination.
“The level is high this year but been out by just one point is just frustrating.”
Current compound women’s World University Champion Katia D’AGOSTINO is out, too. She was ranked 13 in the first elimination.
Val d’Isere bronze medallist Petra GOEBEL, on the other hand, moved on in the second elimination after winning the three-way shoot-off for the eight place.
German recurve woman Elena RICHTER was expecting gold and a double tittle in a row. She lost a shoot-off to Laurence BALDAUFF (AUT).
“It’s just not my day… I had bad groupings and problems with my sight,” said Elena. “In the shoot-off BALDAUFF shot a straight six while I shot a four… she did great.”
Italian Irene FRANCHINI – back after a six-year hiatus – is also out. The mother-of-two couldn’t do better than 15 place with a 146.
In the recurve men’s division Italian Massimiliano MANDIA just missed the cut: “Today I was shooting good but at the end, on a 20 cm target face, I missed one shot… and now I’m out for one point.”
Pasi AHJOKIVI (FIN) and Alessandro GIANNINI went to shoot-off for the eight place in the barebow men’s competition. Pasi won. The barebow women had a three-way shoot-off for the seventh and eighth places. Slovenian Tina GUTMAN and Italian Cinzia NOZIGLIA went through.
The top eight in each division proceeded into the second elimination round, shot over eight targets. Then, the top four move on to four-target semifinals – to decide who shoots Sunday’s gold medal matches.
