Roeffen completes dominant season with three 30s at youth final

Dutch 18-year-old Quinty Roeffen shot three 30-point sets to win the recurve women’s event at the Indoor Archery World Series Youth Finals and complete a dominant 18-metre season, as Leo Sulik, Nicklas Bredal Bryld and Chloe Leroy also collected circuit crowns.

Nimes hosted the under-21 finals of the indoor series for the second straight year.

Roeffen, who had already won the 250-level events in Lausanne and Luxembourg at the end of 2023, was the headline. A cut above the competition at seemingly every turn, she was the most composed – and least challenged – finalist as she defeated final opponent Irati Unamunzaga Altuna in straight sets.

“It was a really good match for me,” she said. “I hoped this match would go well but 90 I didn’t expect it but I hoped it.”

Roeffen is a member of the Dutch recurve women’s squad pursuing a quota place for the upcoming Olympic Games, with the next opportunity coming at the European Championships in Essen in May.

Leo Sulik, of Croatia, is also likely to be there. He showed mettle by delivering a closer nine – after a wild last set – to beat Javier Merida to recurve under 21 men’s gold.

After two Danish compound men – Stephan Hansen and Mathias Fullerton – shot perfect scores but fell out early in matchplay in Nimes, the close-knit club was delivered some recompense by Nicklas Bredal Bryld, whose two-point win over Fabrizio Aloisi in the compound under-21 men’s final (147-145) was more comfortable than the score reads.

The compound under-21 women’s final was all-France, only a last-end measure from the judge proving the difference between Chloe Leroy and Lea Girault (142-141).

Competition in Nimes concludes this afternoon before the indoor series moves to Las Vegas in two weeks, where the senior champions will be decided.
