Biggest-ever prize fund announced for World Cup in 2022
The calendar included on this page was updated on 5 December 2021, when Gwangju was announced as a replacement for the stage in Shanghai, and again on 14 February 2022, when Tlaxcala was revealed as the host of the 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final.
The upcoming season of the Hyundai Archery World Cup is set to feature the biggest total prize fund in the circuit’s 16-year history, with 323,600 CHF available over its four stages and the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final.
Stages are scheduled to take place monthly from April to July in Antalya, Turkey; Shanghai, China; Paris, France; and Medellin, Colombia.
The host of the 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final, which is planned to run in September, has not yet been announced.
Should the ongoing pandemic and travel restrictions cause any event to withdraw from the circuit, an alternate venue will be sought for the same date before a stage is rescheduled or cancelled.
Athletes have competed annually for the Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion trophies since 2006. The coveted titles are awarded at the season-ending finale where only eight of the best athletes in each of the four international competition categories are invited to take part. They qualify by either winning stages or by accruing ranking points with consistently high finishes.
Jack Williams, Lisa Unruh, Mike Schloesser and Sara Lopez are the reigning Hyundai Archery World Cup Champions.
Antalya and Medellin are returning event hosts in 2022. The former, a Mediterranean coastal city in the south of Turkey, will host a stage of archery’s elite circuit for a record 15th time next season, having only missed 2021 to host the European Championships and penultimate Olympic qualifier instead.
Medellin replaces Guatemala City as the Americas stop, having previously been on the calendar from 2013 to 2016 and again in 2019.
Event | Dates | City | Country |
---|---|---|---|
Stage 1 | 18-24 April | Antalya | Turkey |
Stage 2 | 16-22 May | Gwangju | Korea |
Stage 3 | 20-26 June | Paris | France |
Stage 4 | 18-24 July | Medellin | Colombia |
Final | 15-16 October | Tlaxcala | Mexico |
The record-setting prize fund on offer during the 2022 season comprises 30,400 CHF at each stage – up nearly 220% since 2019 – and 202,000 CHF at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final, which is an increase of more than 40% compared to three years ago.
Each circuit champion next year will take home 28,000 CHF.
Other changes planned for 2022 include the introduction of bonus points that reward top qualifiers, the removal of the top-eight bye and an adjustment to qualification cuts, alternate uniforms during finals, and standardisation of the event schedules.
All teams will be required to provide a second shirt so that archers facing each other in televised individual finals wear different colours.
Until this season, archers qualifying in the top eight individual seeds at a stage would receive a bye into the third round of matchplay, or last 32, where they would receive an automatic one point towards the Hyundai Archery World Cup Ranking. The bye has been removed and, instead, the top eight seeds will receive bonus points, eight for the top qualifier, seven for second and so on. Bonus points are added automatically to the Hyundai Archery World Cup Ranking, irrespective of an archer’s final result.
There will now also be a top-64 cut after qualifying in the individual event – unless at least 104 athletes are registered to a category at the final deadline, in which case the cut will be made at 128. (Any archers who seed outside of those places will be eliminated after qualifying.)
These changes have allowed standardisation of the schedules of each event, making the tournaments easier to follow for fans and the media. (World Archery may still change the following session order in exceptional circumstances.)
Day | Morning session | Afternoon session |
---|---|---|
Tuesday (day 1) | Practice | Compound qualification |
Wednesday (day 2) | Compound team eliminations | Recurve qualification |
Thursday (day 3) | Recurve team eliminations | Compound eliminations |
Friday (day 4) | Mixed team eliminations | Recurve eliminations |
Saturday (day 5) | Compound team finals (televised) | Compound final fours (televised) |
Sunday (day 6) | Recurve team finals (televised) | Recurve final fours (televised) |
The Hyundai Archery World Cup was launched in 2006 as an annual elite competition circuit for national teams.
It celebrated its 15th anniversary season in 2021, one year delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prof Dr Ugur Erdener said: “The successful and safe return of the Hyundai Archery World Cup for its 15th anniversary season in 2021 was essential for our athletes, valuable for our stakeholders and paramount for the health of the sport. Having run a complete calendar of four events, allowing archers to prepare for the Olympics, in challenging conditions, we’re determined to build on the achievement in 2022.”
“We’ve listened to feedback from archers and media partners as we continue to innovate and invest in the international calendar. The upcoming season will see increased prize pots, clearer scheduling and more opportunities to compete.”
“The Hyundai Archery World Cup remains the pinnacle of elite archery competition.”
The 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup is scheduled to start in Antalya, Turkey in April.
