About

† 1930-2008

Doreen Viola Hansen Wilber was the top woman archer in the United States between 1965 and 1975.

She first became interested in archery in 1957 when her husband, Paul ‘Skeeter’ Wilber, a local mechanic shop owner, received a bow and a set of arrows as payment for an auto repair bill.

Skeeter gave her instruction and was her only coach.

Doreen placed second at the 1969 world championships and was again runner-up two years later, before becoming Olympic gold medallist at Munich 1972, aged 42, setting two world records.

She died on 19 October 2008 of Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 78.
