Three world records fall during qualifying at European paras

The first day of the European Para Championships saw three new team world records set during qualification at the Giulio Onesti Olympic training centre in Rome, Italy.

Turkey’s W1 mixed double shot 1299 to beat the previous mark by nine, the compound women’s double from Great Britain added nine points to their own record with 1385, and the compound men’s double world-best was upped by 12.

The latter record will be shared by Slovakia and Turkey – the two teams shot identical qualifying scores of 1368. (Slovakia took top seed with more 10s.)

A number of other record scores were shot but these are not expected to be ratified as the events did not meet the minimum number of national teams.

The individual top seeds were won by Yavuz Papagan, Elisabetta Mijno, Jere Forsberg, Jess Stretton, Yigit Caner Aydin and Fatma Danabas.

Forsberg and Nathan MacQueen tied to lead the compound men’s 72-arrow 50-metre round on 695 points. The Finnish archer took pole ahead of the brackets on 10-count, shooting 50 arrows in the central ring to the British shooter’s 48.

MacQueen’s compatriot Stretton, the top women’s qualifier and his mixed doubles teammate, matched the top men on points – tying the compound women’s para world record (of 695) after finishing with back-to-back ends of 59.

Competition in Rome continues with team eliminations on Wednesday and individual eliminations on Thursday, when the visually impaired events will also begin.

Finals on Friday and Saturday are scheduled to take place next to the Stadio dei Marmi, which hosted the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in 2017.
