Spain names teams for Antalya, Gwangju and World Games

Spain's 2022 recurve selection

Spain has confirmed its recurve and compound teams for the first two stages of the 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup, in Antalya (Turkey) and Gwangju (Korea), plus the upcoming World Games in Birmingham (USA).

The events take place in April, May and July respectively.

The recurve team for the Hyundai World Cup openers features 2018 Youth Olympic Games silver medallist Elia Canales alongside Sandra Cebrian and Leyre Fernandez, with 15-year-old Irati Unamunzaga (Antalya only) and Olympian Ines de Velasco (Gwangju only) joining for one event each in the women’s line-up.

Reigning European Champion Pablo Acha, 2015 Archery World Cup Champion Miguel Alvarino, Tokyo 2020 Olympian Daniel Castro and Ken Sanchez make up the roster on the men’s side.

The Spanish recurve men had one of their best-ever seasons in 2021 and the team enters this season ranked number four in the world.

In the compound selection, rising star Andrea Muñoz now appears to be the top woman in Spain.

Having achieved the full qualification criteria, she will be sent to both the first two stages of the international circuit. Andrea will be joined in Antalya by Gonzalo Linares and in Gwangju by the world number 14, and a former stage winner on the tour, Andrea Marcos.

Muñoz will be the sole compound representative for Spain at the World Games, with the Spanish team in the USA completed for the field archery competitions by recurve man Carlos Iglesias and barebow shooters David Garcia and Ana Cano in the men’s and women’s events, respectively.

The in-form Muñoz has recently been adding to her growing domestic status, breaking two more Spanish national records. She shot 695 for the 72-arrow 50-metre qualifying round and 149 in matchplay, both new under-21 bests in the country. She has now set seven records this season.

The international season begins on 18-24 April with the first stage of the 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.
