Compounders Schloesser, Avdeeva take top spots in world rankings

There are new compound world number ones since the latest world ranking list was issued after the second stage of the 2021 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Mike Schloesser now leads the compound men’s ranking once again and Natalia Avdeeva tops the women’s for the first time in her career.

Schloesser, the reigning Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion, won in Lausanne after finishing runner-up at the season opener in Guatemala. He takes the number one position vacated by Braden Gellenthien, who slips to third, and slots in ahead of world champion James Lutz.

Spots numbers two to four – Lutz, Gellenthien and Kris Schaff – are all occupied by archers from the USA. That is likely to change after next week’s European Championships.

Avdeeva’s bronze medal in Lausanne helped her overtake Alexis Ruiz, who has not podiumed so far this season. The Russian archer’s ranking score is significantly buoyed by her world title, which will not depreciate much for the remainder of the year. Her previous best world ranking was second from mid-2015 to early-2016.

Tanja Gellenthien is up to a career-high third after her gold medal last weekend.

There has been no change at the top of the recurve world ranking. Brady Ellison further cemented his lead in the men’s list, while Kang Chae Young remains the women’s number one despite not shooting internationally so far in 2021.

The next world ranking list is expected to be released just after the European Championships, which start with qualification on Tuesday in Antalya.
