Who can win Olympic archery quota places at the 2019 European Games in Minsk?

The 2019 European Games in Minsk also act as one of Europe’s continental qualification events for the archery competitions at next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. It’s part of the second – continental – stage of the quota assignment process after the first 56 places were won at the 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships.

There are up to four quota places available across the mixed team and individual competitions.

Throughout the continental qualification process, there are 12 spots in Tokyo reserved solely for athletes from European countries. A third of those are awarded at this tournament and the remaining (eight places) at the European Championships in 2020.

The mixed team competition in Minsk, which finishes on Sunday 23 June, qualifies one pair. Individual finals on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 June add further one individual spot in each gender.

No finisher outside the top four can receive a quota place at this tournament. Any spots that cannot be assigned according to the scenarios listed below are leftover and added to the final world qualifying tournament, which will be held in Berlin in 2020.

Mixed team

The highest-ranked recurve mixed team at the 2019 European Games receives two Olympic quota places – one in the men’s event and one in the women’s.

As some European nations have already won places at the 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships, there are some situations in which the quota places would have to be reassigned down the rankings.

No mixed team that finishes outside the top four can win a quota place in Minsk.

If Great Britain wins: the second-placed mixed team receives the spots, instead, unless the silver medallist is listed below.

If Great Britain wins and Belarus, Denmark, Germany, Moldova, Russia, Sweden or Ukraine comes second: the second-placed mixed team receives one men’s spot and a second women’s place is made available in the individual competition.

If Great Britain wins and Italy or the Netherlands comes second: the second-placed mixed team receives one women’s spot and a second men’s place is made available in the individual competition.

If Belarus, Denmark, Germany, Moldova, Russia, Sweden or Ukraine wins: the winning mixed team receives one men’s spot and a second women’s place is made available in the individual competition.

If Italy or the Netherlands wins: the winning mixed team receives one women’s spot and a second men’s place is made available in the individual competition.

Individual

The highest-ranked individual archer in the recurve men’s and women’s events at the 2019 European Games receives an Olympic quota place for their country.

Qualification in the individual competition is assessed after the mixed team event. As some European nations already have quota spots from the worlds – some situations would cause a place to be reassigned down the rankings.

No archer that finishes outside the top four can win a quota place in Minsk.

If the men’s winner is from Great Britain, Italy or the Netherlands or the country that received a mixed team men’s spot in Minsk: the silver medallist receives the men’s quota place.

If the women’s winner is from Belarus, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Moldova, Russia, Sweden or Ukraine or the country that received a mixed team women’s spot in Minsk: the silver medallist receives the women’s quota place.

The archery competitions at the 2019 European Games take place on 21-27 June in Minsk, Belarus.
