Germany sending Unruh, Floto to Rio

The pair were announced as Germany’s archery team in Rio on Thursday 23 June, following the completion of internal selections.

Germany won both its single men’s and women’s invitations at the World Archery Championships in Copenhagen 2015. The women’s place came courtesy of Lisa Unruh, who finished ninth, and the men’s via Florian Kahllund, who won the secondary qualification tournament there.

Head coach Oliver Haidn said: “Lisa Unruh and Florian Floto absolutely deserve to go to the Olympics. Both have great potential, which hopefully they are able to reach in Rio.”

Both athletes will make their debut at the Games in Brazil.

Lisa Unruh, 28, is the reigning World Archery Indoor Champion and World Archery Field Champion. Ranked 18th in the world as of the end of June 2016, she has numerous medals with the German women’s team. Her best individual finish at a world event was silver at the Hyundai Archery World Cup stage in Medellin in 2014.

Florian Floto, 28, won team gold at the 2016 World Archery Indoor Championships with Germany. He reached the last 32 of each of the three Hyundai Archery World Cup stages in 2016.

Germany’s men and women competed in the final qualification tournament at the third stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in Antalya but were unable to upgrade to full team quotas. The men finished fourth in the event, in which the top three teams qualified.
