19 countries awarded 62 Paralympic quota places in main qualification at 2019 world championships

Athletes from 19 nations secured 62 quota places for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games during mixed team and individual eliminations at the 2019 World Archery Para Championships in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

Eighteen more spots will be awarded before the end of the event, either in the secondary tournament on Friday or after the results of the finals.

The top four mixed teams in each category at the World Archery Para Championships win quota places. Spots are also awarded to the top finishers in the individual event.

A total of 140 athletes in total will compete in the archery events at the next Paralympics. The number of athletes in each category differs.

Over half of the quota places are won at this world championships, 30 are distributed across three continental qualifiers, and at least 12 are available at the final qualification tournament in 2020. The remaining spots are split between the host country and awarded to smaller para nations on the merit of universality.

Remaining quota places

The scenarios that will decide the 18 remaining quota places available for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games at the 2019 World Archery Para Championships.

Recurve men (12/16 individual places awarded): Four places are available in the secondary tournament.

Athletes from Azerbaijan, Chinese Taipei, France, Great Britain, Italy, Korea, Mongolia, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and the USA will compete for the spots.

Recurve women (5/8 individual places awarded): Three places are available in the secondary tournament.

Athletes from Brazil, Great Britain, Greece, Japan, Korea, Turkey and Ukraine will compete for the spots.

Compound men (11/20 individual places awarded): Nine places are available in the secondary tournament, unless the USA’s Ben Thompson wins the world title. If he does, then his team gets a third spot and there are only eight places left on offer.

Athletes from Australia, Finland, France, Korea, Italy, Malaysia, Poland, South Africa, Switzerland, Slovakia, Thailand, Turkey and Ukraine will compete in the secondary tournament.

Compound women (7/8 individual places awarded): One place is available in the secondary tournament.

Athletes from Chile, France, Great Britain, Russia and Turkey will compete for the spot. Anastasia Dzhioeva can only win it if her Russian teammates win in the mixed event.

W1 women (1/2 individual places awarded): If China takes W1 mixed team gold, the team will receive an additional W1 women’s quota place. If Russia wins the final, then Italy gets the place.

The 2019 World Archery Para Championships take place on 3-9 June in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
