Korea sets second mixed team record but Chen leads women’s qualification
Korea’s So Chaewon and Choi Yonghee scored a combined 1412 out of 1440 points to set a new compound mixed team ranking round world record at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, just one day after Oh Jin Hyek and Kang Chae Young broke the recurve record.
“I didn’t recognise it was a world record because my score was lower than my average this year. I’m happy to have another record – this is the third,” said Chaewon. “On the other hand, I’m under pressure. I have to do the same as the qualification round [in the rest of the event].”
Choi seeded top in the compound men’s event with 709, two up on Korean teammate Hong Sung Ho.
Malaysia’s Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki ranked third with 705.
So scored 703, the highest of the four Koreans that ranked third to sixth, but the compound women’s leader was from Chinese Taipei.
Chen Yi-Hsuan shot 706 to lead the 72-arrow 50-metre round.
“I set the Chinese Taipei record in March with 703 so it’s only a few more points than that,” she said.
“The improvement has come from working hard and smart this last few weeks with the team, and our team coach found a new arrow combination that’s working well, as well as working on my mental game and planning with our coach and team.”
India’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam ranked second with 705.
All three compound team events – men, women and mixed – had Korea take the top seed, followed by India in second and Chinese Taipei in third.
There is no individual eliminations event for the compound division at the 2018 Asian Games, making the team events the focus.
The recurve competition in Jakarta includes team, mixed team and individual events.
The archery competitions at the 2018 Asian Games take place on 21-26 August in Jakarta, Indonesia.
