First compound gold for Spain in World Cup circuit’s history
The compound women’s finals featured four athletes with little podium history at Antalya 2015: Andrea Marcos and Mariia Vinogradova in the gold, Stephanie Salinas and Laura Longo contesting bronze.
Marcos ended up in tears.
At her first Archery World Cup competition she won gold.
“I was very nervous,” a clearly overwhelmed Andrea admitted. “Yesterday I didn’t have to compete so I had all the tension accumulated in my mind – and today everything went very fast.”
Russian Mariia Vinogradova led the match until the third end by one point. She started the fourth with an 8.
“She was blown off the right line more than me so I took advantage to tie the match,” Andrea said of the blustering wind near the targets.
Shoot-off: 10 for Mariia, 10 for Andrea – but the shaft landing just closer to the centre gave Spain its first compound gold medal in Archery World Cup history.
Vinogradova collected the Longines Prize for Precision – Stage Award for shooting the most 10s in the compound women’s category.
For the second Archery World Cup stage in a row, Mexico’s Stephanie Salinas collected individual bronze.
She is off to a good start…
In Shanghai, she beat Malaysia’s Fatin Mat Salleh.
In Antalya, she beat Laura Longo from Italy.
The match was one-sided. Longo put in a bad first end and struggled to get back into a competitive position.
Salinas, who before 2015 had little in the way of international silverware except a cadet Pan-American title, is a near-lock to make her home-field Archery World Cup Final now after two impressive events to start the season.
