Four matches that mattered in the Antalya early rounds
In the first two rounds of Antalya, high qualifiers like the USA’s Braden GELLENTHIEN, Dutchman Sjef VAN DEN BERG and Lisa UNRUH from Germany all went out to lower seeds.
With so many matches on at the same time, it’s difficult to know where on the field to look – but here’s four matches that were definitely worth watching…
ELLISON – USA / GARRETT – USA (first round)
Three-time Archery World Cup Champion Brady ELLISON started the day – early in the morning – with two perfect 30s to beat rookie international teammate Zack GARRETT 6-2.
Brady, who often qualifies high and takes a top-eight bye into the afternoon, is not a morning person.
“Getting up so early is not easy but we have to do it. Is our job.”
JAGER – DEN / XU – CHN (second round)
In a replay of the Belek 2013 World Archery Championships, Maja JAGER and XU Jing clashed again in the second round at Antalya.
JAGER beat XU those two year ago, but in 2015 Jing took revenge.
“I had some bad shots,” said Maja after the 6-2 lost. “She took advantage of them and won.”
MARCEN – COL / TONIOLI – ITA (second round)
Maja MARCEN expected a tight match against Italian Marcela TONIOLI – and it was. TONIOLI qualified as the 32nd seed and MARCEN 33rd, one place more. The pair last met in 2011 in Ogden where Marcela won.
It was Maja’s turn at Antalya 2015: “She has beaten me before, but today I saw she wasn’t as strong so I took advantage of it until the end.”
ROUX – RSA / GELLENTHIEN – USA (second round)
South Africa’s team silver medallist in Belek 2013 Patrick ROUX shot 148 out of 150 points – with only two arrows out of the 10-ring – to beat multiple times World Cup medallist Braden GELLENTHIEN in a close contest.
“I was concentrated but also nervous,” said Patrick. “I knew Braden shot a 150 in his first match. I saw my first three 30s and I was like: I just the need the last arrow in the yellow!”
