Individual eliminations trim field at Bangkok Para World Championships
Recurve men W2
Korea's LEE Hong Gu on 629 points and Chinese Taipei's TSENG Lung Hui's 619 led the recurve men's W2 field, and received byes into Tuesday's 1/16 elimination round. Both on 618 points, Paul BROWNE (GBR) and Stéphane GILBERT (FRA) took 3rd and 4th places; BROWNE finished more 10s than the Frenchman. Bato TSYDENDORZHIEV (RUS) had 5th with 616, followed by CHENG Changjie (CHN), Ebrahim RANJBARKIVAJ (IRI) and local Thai archer Hanreuchai NETSIRI.
Recurve women W2
The top 10 recurve women W2 competitors were awarded with byes into the 1/8 elimination round. 2012 Paralympic Champion Zahra NEMATI (IRI) was top seed, after a morning that yielded 608 points and 14 10s. Svetlana BARANTSEVA (RUS) came 2nd with 595, followed by Roksolona DZOBA-BALYAN (UKR) on 587 and 586 from Italy's Elisabetta MIJNO. JO Jang Moon (KOR) finished 5th, with more 10s than Hatice BAYAR (TUR), 6th. Two of her Turkish teammates were in 8th and 9th: Merve Nur EROGLU and Ozlem KALAY. Svetlana RAKHLETSOVA (RUS) took 10th, and the last bye.
Recurve men standing
In a tight 1/16 round match in the recurve men's standing competition - while those with byes looked on - France's Armando CABRERIA needed a shoot-off to beat Diogo SOUSA from Brazil, 8-7. Then, in the 1/8 round, Vaclav KOSTAL (CZE) shot 10 to Iranian archer Gholamreza RAHIMI's 8, to win their one-arrow tie-breaker. At the same time, Oguzhan POLAT (TUR) was busy knocking out individual silver and team gold medallist in London, Russian archer Oleg SHESTKOV.
The quarter-finals will feature five of the top-8 qualifiers: 1st seed and double-Paralympic gold medallist Timur TUCHINOV (RUS) will face CABREIRA (8th), while 2nd seed Alexandre LASVENES (FRA) has Yuriy KOPIY (UKR). Turkey's hopes rest on two archers: Zafer KORKMAZ, shooting against ZAHO Lixue - and POLAT, when he takes on KOSTAL.
Recurve women standing
Two recurve women standing athletes with byes into the 1/8 round found themselves on the wrong end of hot-streak upsets: 3rd seed Oyun-Erdene BUYANJARGAL (MGL) lost out to Lee FORD (USA), 6-4, before local Thai archer Wasana KHUTAWISAP eliminated n°6-ranked LEE Hwa Sook (KOR) in straight sets.
In the quarter-finals, the top seed from Poland, Milena OLSZEWSKA, will face Irina BATOROVA (RUS) - as n°2 LIANG Qiurong and MA Huan engage in a Chinese derby. The other last-eight matches will feature Brigitte DUBOC (FRA) and KIM Ran Sook (KOR), and the authors of the 1/8-round upsets, FORD and KHUTAWISAP.
Compound men open
Due to the number of competitors in this open category, eight matches were needed in a 1/48 round - before a full line for 1/24 eliminations. Canada's Kevin EVANS beat John Olav JOHANSEN (NOR) in a shoot-off to make it through that stage, before the eight top seeds - who had early-round byes - joined the field.
Two of them would not stick around for long. N°8 Guillermo Javier RODRIGUEZ (ESP) lost to Frank MAGUIRE (GBR) by one point, 138-137, while n°5 Ji?í KLICH (CZE) bit the dust courtesy of Brazilian Andrey CASTRO, 141-138. Higher seeded archers continued to fall in the 1/8 eliminations. Koreans GO Sung Kil (n°4) and SHIN Dong Heon (n°6) lost to Philippe HORNER (FRA) and Gianpaolo CANCELLI (ITA) respectively. Third-ranked Erdo?an AYGAN (TUR) was beaten by Richard HENNAHANE (GBR), and n°2 Eric PEREIRA (FRA) was shown the exit by Do?an HANCI (TUR).
Top qualifier Alberto SIMONELLI (ITA) and n°7 Finnish Jere FORSBERG (main photo), 2013 Paralympic Champion, are the two surviving top-eights: SIMONELLI will shoot against John STUBBS - who beat his British teammate MAGUIRE in the last 16 - and FORSBERG will face HANCI. Completing Tuesdays' quarter-final roster: CASTRO versus HORNER and HENNAHANE against CANCELLI.
Compound women open
Both British London 2012 Paralympic medallists, Danielle BROWN and Mel CLARKE - who were 1st and 2nd in qualification - had no problem making it through to the quarter-finals. Some of their high seeded opponents had no such luck.
Team world champion in 2011, 4th seed Olga POLEGAEVA (RUS) lost a shoot-off to Lucia KUPCZYK (GER) in the 1/16 round, and Canadian Karen VAN NEST - who qualified 6th - went out to Iranian Farzaneh ASGARI, 131-136. Ashlee SHEPPARD (USA) was 5th in qualifications, but lost in the 1/8 stage to Larysa MIKHNIEVA (UKR).
Italy's Eleonora SARTI will challenge BROWN in the quarter-finals, while Carmen RUBIO (ESP) takes on CLARKE. MIKHNIEVA has KUPCZYK, and n°3 Burcu DAG (TUR) will face ASGARI.
Competition continued today with team and mixed team elimination matches.
