Compound team events added to programme of 2023 Pan American Games

Compound team events will be added to the programme of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, bringing the total number of archery medals available to 10.

Last year’s edition of the multisport event in Lima was the first to include compound.

Colombia’s Sara Lopez and El Salvador’s Roberto Hernandez won the inaugural individual titles, while Argentina took a surprise gold in the compound mixed team competition.

The compound men’s and women’s team events, new for 2023, will use teams consisting of two athletes per gender, borrowing the format used at the recent Summer University Games in Napoli.

An additional 14 quota places will also be added, bringing the total number of archers competing at the Games to 98.

“We are extremely excited about this addition to the Pan American Games. Compound is not yet an Olympic discipline but this is one step closer to that dream,” said World Archery Americas president Maria Emma Gaviria.

Archery was first included on the sports programme of the Pan American Games in 1979 and has featured ever since.
